North Winchester Bridge Replacement

Client: Delta Construction
Scope of Work: Drilled Pilings
Project Year: 2018

The Project

The reconstruction was part of the Old Highway 99N Reconstruction Project, which included the replacement of two bridges to accommodate a wider roadway section.

The Solution

For this project, Pacific Foundation was contracted to install the prebored piles using 32″ temporary casing and our Bauer BG 12 drill rig.

The Result

The widening of the North Winchester Bridge improved safety, accessibility, and mobility for the community, providing upgraded infrastructure and enhanced stormwater management systems.

Historical Overview

  • Construction: The bridge was constructed in 1923 by builder H. E. Doering of Portland, Oregon, and designed by engineer Conde Balcom McCullough of the Oregon State Highway Commission.
  • Structure Type: It’s a concrete open spandrel deck arch bridge, known for its aesthetic Tudor and Gothic treatment of spandrel columns, curtain walls, and pedestrian lookouts.
  • Significance: The Winchester Bridge is the longest reinforced-concrete ribbed deck arch designed by McCullough in the 1920s, exemplifying his view that a reinforced-concrete arch should be favored in bridge design for its “quiet, simple dignity of its lines.”
  • Dimensions: The main span length is 112.0 feet (34.1 meters), with the total structure length being 901.6 feet (274.8 meters). The roadway width is 24 feet (7.32 meters).
  • Initial Construction: The bridge was initially constructed in 1924.

2018 Reconstruction

  • Project Overview: The reconstruction was part of the Old Highway 99N Reconstruction Project, which included the replacement of two bridges to accommodate a wider roadway section.
  • Elements: The project comprised three major elements: bridge work, road work, and sewer utility work.
  • Completion: The bridge work was substantially completed by December 2018, with the final lift paving scheduled for April, depending on weather conditions.
